I’m still bummed, if not downright pissed, that I never got the chance to even SEE a NES Classic. I wanted to buy one for every member of the family. I ended up with none.

You know those people that seem oblivious to their surroundings when walking around? The ones that tend to be most often messing with their phones, or sometimes lost in a book? The ones who will usually walk in the middle of a sidewalk or corridor, sometimes swaying from side to side, usually walking too slowly for the crowd?

I propose a new word to call these people: ZOMOBI. A contraction of “zombie” and “mobile”, zomobi describes how they’re most often brainlessly moving ahead, often with a mobile device in their hands. As a bonus point, it works in both the languages I use the most: English and French.

So, when you’re out and about, don’t be a zomobi: pay attention to what’s going on around you!

The new Star Trek series in Canada...

Oh, boo.

They just announced how the new Star Trek series will be distributed all over the world.

In the USA, as announced before, the first episode will be shown on TV while the others will be on CBS’ All-Access streaming service.

For the rest of the world, in 188 countries, that’ll be on Netflix…

… except in Canada.

“The Bell Media rollout for the new Star Trek series in Canada will mirror the launch in the United States. The first episode will premiere on Canada’s most-watched broadcast network, CTV, on the same night as CBS. All remaining episodes will initially be televised on Bell Media’s cable networks, Space (in English) and Z (in French), and then later exclusively on CraveTV, Bell Media’s streaming video-on-demand service.”

I ditched cable some time back, so neither Space or Z are options. The episodes will be available on the online CraveTV platform, but “later”…. whenever THAT will be. I don’t have CraveTV, I could subscribe to see the series, but the “later” worries me. Basically, I get the worst deal in the WORLD for the new series.

Yes, I’m annoyed.

The weird thing is, as mentioned before, the French dub will be on Z… except that Z ditched its sci-fi programming a few years back, which was one of my reasons for ditching cable in the first place. Boo!

We had a building contest about trains on the Creeper’s Lab, and I decided to try my hand at a modern build. Seen above is a CN SD70M-2, built at a 2:1 scale. I think it turned out nicely enough,and others must have thought so since it scored the second place of the contest!

As some of you might know, the Starbound team recently decided to run a short stories contest. I was looking for a writing exercice at the time, and the timing couldn’t have been better: I decided to give it a shot! While I didn’t win, I’m happy with what I came up with. I posted the full story after the jump in case you want to check it out.

The escape had been a feathers-ruffling one.

The odds didn’t work in his favor, but the desperate Avian had to make a break for it. He might have been alone, but he wasn’t completely resourceless. A sudden maneuver had allowed him to get past the blockade and escape what his opponents had hoped to be a fully surrounded area. As soon as he had put enough distance between him and his enemies, he jumped to FTL speed, picking a random destination where he was sure that he couldn’t be followed.

Still shaking from all the stress of that close call, the Avian took a long, hard look all around his starship. It was in shambles and barely holding together still. It had gotten him this far, but that was it for the time being – the vessel needed some repairs, badly. Entire decks had gone dark; the onboard AI system was offline; the hull was cracked in several critical areas, and even the bridge wouldn’t grant him access anymore. The door system appeared to be malfunctioning, which was definitely an issue since the Avian’s sole companion, his beloved pet, was waiting on the other side. The Avian knew he needn’t worry, though: his lone friend was resourceful and independent, and would come out of the experience unscathed.

The feathered pilot’s thoughts turned to the next issue, perhaps the more important one in the light of the multiple challenges he was now facing: where was he? He peered outside a window and saw that the ship’s onboard navigation had completed its mission before going offline. The ship appeared to be in stable orbit around a large planet that seemed fit for life, with a star shining bright in the darkness. A quick systems check told the escapee that the teleporter system was running on low power, but was still in working condition. He could warp down, but only at a close location. Unfortunately, the failure of most of his systems left him in the dark as to what to expect. What would he find down there? A place much like his home world, with seemingly impossibly high trees and large plains? A cold desert, forcing him to forage for survival? An inferno making it hard to keep one thought’s focused, endangering his survival? A wet wasteland, home to various diseases?

Only his eyes could tell him anything from his current vantage point; he’d need to go down personally to see what challenges he’d face. He might be risking it all, ending this entire gamble on a crushing defeat. At the same time, this foreign world had something new, something the Avian hadn’t encountered in weeks. This something could make all the difference. Among other things, this planet held…

… Hope.
